Exhibition “360 La” is an open studio exhibition by Serge Attukwei Clottey where he allows people in the La Township to engage his art in his studio, and on the streets of the township. For this exhibition the artist engages the community as a collaborator in the production of the art works. The narratives in Attukwei’s work, especially in his yellow gallon works gyrate around the traditional histories of migration and trade of the La Township. These works, which he terms “Afrogallonism” explores how the past customary ways of life can be engaged to create certain solutions that can be used in confronting issues of the present such as environmental protection, and repurposing /recycling that can go further to shape the future of the
According to the artist, “The histories of my community and extended family inspire my art. The narrative in my art explores the family histories in the areas of migration and trade. My community plays a huge part in my work because it serves as my material source and space for production. My work highlights issues about the environment, investigates the work of the Chinese in Africa, and the trade relationship between Europe and Africa. The issues mentioned affect my community, and so how the community relates to them inspires the kind of work I produce. I interrogate the politics around these issues through performance art, photography, painting and installations.”#sergeattukweiclottey #labadi #afrogallonismteam#gnypgallery #gallery1957
